Pornography: A Thriller production diary #1

We are now in the thick of preproduction on Pornography: A Thriller, written and (to be) directed by David Kittredge, my editor on Socket and produced by me! Me! Me!

The official website will be up soon, but for the moment you can check out the Pornography: A Thriller page in the “Projects” section.

The script is a dark and trippy mindfuck set in the world of gay pornography. The nutshell version of the plot: A porn actor on his way out of the business disappears mysteriously in the mid-90’s. A journalist specializing in gay adult video reviews investigates the disappearance a decade later, rekindling the paranormal energy from years before. One year after the disappearance of the journalist, a gay porn model, spurred on by his nightmares of events past, recreates the disappearance of the two men on video with disasterous results for all involved.

The first day of principal photography is February 4, 2008. We’ll be shooting for 15 days here in Los Angeles, with a possible 2nd unit shoot in NYC after we finish.

We’re almost finished with casting. There are four leads, about ten supporting roles, and tons of small, one- or two-line parts adding up to a total of over 30 speaking roles. We’ve cast some of my friends from other projects I’ve worked on - Matthew Montgomery, who was one of my leads in Socket, Steve Callahan and Nick Salamone, both leads in the first feature I ever produced, Nine Lives (available on dvd from TLA and Amazon - buy one now! Help me actually make some money from my back end deal!), and in some smaller roles Georgia Jean (Gay Bed and Breakfast of Terror and Socket), Bob ‘Bobaloo’ Koenig (Full Release, GBBOT and Socket) and Amy Seeley (Socket), my oldest friend and collaborator.

Rounding out the cast are Jared Thompson, Pete Scherer, Walter Delmar, Akie Kotabe, Dylan Vox (The Lair and Dante’s Cove), Bret Wolfe (Back Soon), and Len Irving.

There are still a few roles left to cast, and we’ve been calling in folks here and there as the mood strikes us for auditions.

On the production side, we’ve hired my DP on Socket, Ivan Corona, to shoot the film, which is great. Ivan has a great attitude, works fast, and contributes creative ideas when he’s on set. We’re thrilled to have him. Vegan Doug, aka Doug Prinzivalli, aka one of the executive producers, and the production designer, for Socket will be our production designer. Gage “Munster” Hubbard and Liz Mendoza, our awesome goth special makeup effects guy and gal from Socket, Butcher House and GBBOT will be making everyone pretty. We’ve also found our script supervisor, our 1rst AD (my previous AD, Gary Cotti, has moved on to fame and fortune in the DGA training program and isn’t available), and after a meeting last night, I’m betting our costume designer as well. Still to lock in - onset sound mixer, 2nd AD, Key Grip, Gaffer and various PA/interns.

Today is our first table read with (most of) the cast. It will be great to have everyone in the same room. I love making movies because you create a little family for a couple months, and out of that some friends for much longer. There’s something about the shared experience of working so hard that I love.

More as it develops….
