People Who Are Cool: The Roxy Epoxy Interview

Filed under: interviews — admin @ 7:56 pm

Because I’m old, my hearing sucks, and I hate crowds, I rarely see bands live. But for some reason several years ago I found myself coerced into going to a ‘rock’ night at the Eagle in San Francisco. This was sort of at the height of the whole “We’re not typical fags, we like ROCK ‘N ROLL!!!” era in SF.

So I suffered thru the first band, and then proceeded to have my head blown off by the second act of the night – The Epoxies. Their retro new wave + punk sound took me back to my high school days in the 80’s. The lead singer, Roxy Epoxy, was amazing. She never stopped moving, and belted out the super fast songs in a crazy “Is she a tenor?” low voice that was kinda hypnotic. Who is this band? Who is that girl? Holy shit, did I fall in love with them.

I bought their album that night, and kept a watchful eye on this Portland-based awesomeness. I loved them so much that when a “do your own lipsync” meme spread like nerd cancer over Live Journal, I picked The Epoxies’ “Bathroom Stall” as my song. Months later I actually sent it to the lead singer, Roxy Epoxy, who praised it to high Heaven and posted it on their site. When they next appeared in Los Angeles, I managed to contact Roxy and met her all too briefly after their incredible set at the Fonda.

When I was scouring my brain for interview subjects for my “People Who Are Cool” series, Roxy seemed like the perfect choice. As we emailed back and forth for this interview I was struck by how put together she is. Her world view is insightful and ultimately humble, which was a surprise considering my experiences with an admittedly small number of indie band members over the years.

How did a chick from Boston become the lead singer for my favorite band of (almost) all time? You’re about to find out!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Roxy Epoxy!

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Boston…a spoiled brat little only child. Well, that’s what they say about only children…

Did you have a decent childhood?
I guess I had a pretty normal childhood. (What does that mean?) Average? (Who knows.) My father was a doctor. My mother was a corporate professional. I was an absolute outcast though. I had a bowl cut and was the one no one wanted to be seen with from 4th grade on. I hated going to school because it was a social HELL, but it did shape how I turned out. It sucks to hear how different things will be when you grow up, but it is true. As insecure as I still can be now, my skin is so much thicker from being the nerd, freak, outcast, dork.

My parents were and still are wonderful and socially retarded. I learned my social skills from them.

Did you always want to be in a band?
Sure, but I never thought it would happen. I was too shy and/or never thought I would have the chance. I was too insecure to get it started myself. I can’t remember a time growing up when I didn’t stand in front of the mirror performing for myself. However, the thought of getting up in front of others was HORRIFYING! Hell, I wouldn’t even sing with others in the car.

What activities did you participate in while in school?
In retrospect, I wish I had participated in more. I was one of those who wanted to finish the day and leave. I ran track for 6 years. Hurdles and sprints. The runner with the mohawk…it was a little rarer back then. The school I went to now has a girl’s hockey team and it’s fun to think about playing when I was younger. I haven’t had the time (or more effectively) the money to play in years.

I tried debate team for a very short period of time, but left due to the shyness. I guess I did do lights for the theatre productions my senior year…. So, I was a jock, intellectual, theatre person?!?…Nerd or something.

Tell me how you found yourself in P to the O, one of my favorite cities in the country?
I moved to Portland in 1994. I was 20 and trying to escape myself….and it’s where my ex boyfriend and I decided on versus SF and LA. Obviously, I followed myself here. I love this town and have watched it change so much since I moved here. The prices have risen and developers are knocking everything down to build a bunch of overpriced shit shacks.

Regardless, I love this town. I love to visit Boston, but always love to return home to Portland. I am lucky to know a lot of great people here.

You mentioned that you always wanted to perform, but couldn’t imagine actually doing it. Tell me about the road to The Epoxies. I imagine you were in other bands along the way? Would love to hear about them. How did you go from not believing it could happen to actually doing it?

Actually, I hadn’t been in other bands. I tried it once in college. We played 2 songs in front of a crowd and I wore a pumpkin on my head to hide.

What happened was this: My ex boyfriend had been in a band with the Epoxies’ keyboardist. He hooked up with the Epoxies’ guitarist’s girlfriend and they up and moved out of Portland together. Two relationships were over and a band done. Viz and F.M. (guitar and keys) had been talking about doing something new for a bit and it was the time. I ran into F.M. at a party and he told me what he was up to. So I asked if I could try singing with them. It still scared the hell out of me, but I needed a new challenge in life…The rest is history.

I first saw The Epoxies in a gay leather bar, The Eagle, in San Francisco. You guys fucking kicked ass! I immediately bought your CD at the show. I remember talking to a member of another band playing that night, and I was all “The Epoxies are amazing!” and he was all “Yeah, they’re okay…” And then when I was visiting Portland last, I met a guy in a local band and mentioned that The Epoxies was (were?) my favorite band, and he gave me the “Uh huh, cool…” super noncommittal response. JEALOUS I say. I guess I’m naïve, but I thought the other bands would be more supportive. Is that normal when you’re gigging on the road? And when you’re home, is there “We’re all in this together” support, or is it every man for himself?
It’s a mixture. I certainly have respect for those who just plain old don’t like our music. Fine, everyone has their own taste and that has to be respected. On the other end, there are people who think a band is selling out as soon as they start to play out of town or get more than 20 people at their shows. I heard there was some great graffiti in the bathroom at Satyricon before it closed and reopened about what a bunch of sellouts we were (are?). All that ALSO builds a thicker skin. I had a hard time being judged on something like that for a LONG time, but there’s only so much anyone can do about it. I think as long as someone is not being a bigot, I am respectful of a much wider range of opinionsE because of all that experience.

It seems like a great time to ask about your involvement in the Rock Against Bush compilation. Can you tell me more about it, and how you guys got involved?
Fat Mike asked us to be involved. We had been talking with him for a bit and knew we were headed towards being on Fat Wreck, so it came about in that way. As much as people argue about whether musicians should be talking about politics and who cares or that’s stupid, I thought/think it was a great idea. It sparked dialogue. It got ideas out there. I’m not the best public speaker, but it was satisfying to make sure that I knew how to express how I was feeling (and still feel) in an eloquent manner. Again, there are a variety of opinions out there, and I need to respect that, but it was amazing to be involved in a wider message and add my voice to that message.

The Epoxies released three albums on three different labels – Dirt Nap, Fat Wreck Chords and Metropolis. Why the change each time?
We are in good terms with all of our labels. We moved as opportunity shifted. Perhaps it could be viewed as awkward, but a lot of the times the moves were following an opportunity to be able to record and tour properly. All those labels are great labels. I have such admiration for Ken at Dirt Nap. It is such a great label and he is such a great guy.

I’m sure most people have no idea what it means to be on the road in a fan-favorite-but-not-Top-40 band. Can you tell us all what your day-to-day is like when you’re touring?
It is VERY tiring. As time goes on, the body and the mind wear down more and more and it is ALL about getting to play the show. The show and the interaction with good people are the reward. In the States specifically, it can be hard to find a place to sleep and a meal to eat. Maybe you’ll get some beer if it’s a bar. Maybe you’ll get some chips. It is hard to stay healthy. Most bands are in vans, NOT tour busses. Tour busses cost a LOT of money to rent. Usually an entire band is in a van with a trailer that may or may not break down in the middle of the desert or the plains.

EU and UK are a different story. Well, UK is alot like the US food and sleep wise. EU generally provides food and places to sleep and you can rent van gear and driver. It’s a lot easier and the drives are shorter.

It’s worth it though. As happy as I always am to get back to a bed, I always get the tour itch back again. I’ve not toured in about a year now and I can’t stop thinking about Europe.

Are there any songs that The Epoxies thought about covering but never did? I remember telling your merch guy (who was in the band, but I can’t remember who it was) that I thought you guys should do a version of Blondie’s ‘Eat to the Beat’ or ‘Atomic’.
We tried some that just didn’t work for some reason or another. We know the Cars, ‘Just What I Needed’; Gary Numan, ‘Bombers’; Johnny and the Self Abusers, ‘Saints and Sinners’ just to name a few. We’ve heard suggestions to cover Blondie and Missing Persons a lot, but we tended to lean towards the stuff that might be less expected or more underground.

I fucking love your sound. I described it this way on the Interpunk.com site – ‘The Ramones + Devo + Siouxie Sioux = super fun happy time making!’ Regardless of my fanboy math, what are your musical influences?

As I continue my radio show, my influences are ever expanding! I am so in love with music right now! I’d say DEVO, Ramones, and Siouxsie are appropriate for Epoxies and my own influences.

As I’m writing the solo stuff, I’ve had a picture on Nina Hagen up on my screen. I love Lene Lovich, Toyah, and Hazel O’ Conner. I’ve also been really into German and French new wave recently…and Queens of the Stone Age. I think I pull from a lot of places from music, to visuals.

I’ve always loved how being in a band can really cover such a broad spectrum from the audio to the visual to the business. It’s pretty cool. It’s just REALLY hard when a band does EVERYTHING themselves… Like the Epoxies.

What’s the scoop with this radio show? With all the work I’ve done in theater, film and TV, I’d love to have a radio show!
KPSU allows community members to volunteer at the station. I had gone in to do an interview on one show and spin some records on another. Both guys thought I did well and suggested that I try it out. I went through orientation and have been on the air just about a year now. I looooove it. It was another, “here’s a scary and foreign concept. Perhaps I should try it” scenario.

In a couple of weeks I will do my second live DJ set at a local goth night. Let’s see what they make of it.

(NOTE: Hear Roxy’s radio show, here: Roxy’s Ego Hour, )

When you’re not working on music, what are you doing for fun? To make $$$?
I really want to get back into photography for fun. I did it as a job for a long time. But, at least in my case, when I was doing it for work, I didn’t want to do it for fun. I started doing music as an outlet when I was still doing photo as a job. Then I quit the job to tour and want to flip it back the other way. I haven’t done art photography in far too long.

Recently, I’ve been doing yoga for fun and relaxation…and been trying to read some books. I’m a fucking workaholic, so I really need to keep having fun in mind.

As for money, I work at an independently owned chain of barbershops called Rudy’s. Actually, they have some in L.A. I work at both the Portland Rudy’s Barbershops as a receptionist. It doesn’t pay much, but I love my coworkers and it allows me to tour…and look how I want…and act how I want…except when I want to tell a client they’re an idiot…then I have to keep my mouth shut.

I actually got the worst haircut I’ve ever gotten at the Rudy’s here in Silverlake! Without asking the dude just gave me a buzz cut, starting with a strip down the middle so there was no way to stop him once he started! On the flip side, he gave my boyfriend the best haircut – it was the fauxhawk back in the day when they weren’t everywhere, so it seemed cool.
Yeah, I’ve heard stories like that. Actually, I was just talking to another receptionist today about her days at Silverlake. Apparently, the cultures between to two cities are VERY different. I have a couple of stylists I drift to, but I’d honestly let any of them cut my hair. …Yeah, they tend to ask before they start cutting. I hear it all day long…

(NOTE: I sent Roxy three tracks that I’m enjoying at the moment to listen to.)

Give a listen to these tracks and tell me what you think. You’re totally not expected to say you like them if you don’t.
I don’t dislike any of these songs; however, none of them hit me in that spot in my gut when I am fully enamoured.

Song 1 has that acrobatic R&B singing style that I think is overused very often. I think it works here though. Sometimes, this type of singing really needs to be reeled the fuck in! I could see this one as a fun sing along out at a bar after a few drinks.

That was ‘Lost Yo Mind’ by Beyoncé. I was really thinking you would hate this! I’m a big fan of poppy pop, so I’m kind of grooving on this now. But I fully cop to the fact that it’s mainstream pap.
I actually end up liking some stuff that is popular here and there. I’m just not blasted with it like radio listeners. I like both Pink and Kelly Clarkson. I’ve been a HUGE Madonna fan since her first album. I skipped the middle stuff, but I have everything since Ray of Light.

Beyoncé needs to reel her physical self in a little bit. She’s hitting the overexposure route pretty hard.

Song 2 is probably my least favorite. It is by no means a bad song, but I’ve heard it before. It’s not bringing anything new to the table. I want to hear it go out of bounds a little more.

That’s ‘It Started Today’ by Fuzzy, and it’s actually almost 20 years old! I love this song. I got the promo CD when I was working at Sound Warehouse in Chicago in the late 80’s. It’s funny, because at the time it was really fresh, but probably too different because the band went absolutely nowhere. And you’re right, now it sounds like so much other stuff out there.
Well, go figure. Someone starts to pave the way and gets no credit. Such an old tale.

Song 3 is my favorite of the three. It goes on a little too long, but it’s a unique sound to me. It’s just fitting into what I’m finding interesting in music these days. I want to hear people experiment with layers and voices and sounds.

That is a song by my favorite solo artist of all time, Jane Siberry. It’s ‘Lena Is a White Table’ for the album The Walking, which was released in the late 80’s. She’s an incredible artist, although a bit crazy I think. She recently changed her name to ‘Issa’ for some reason. She’s Canadian, and each of her albums, at least the first five or six, is completely different. If you’re into checking her out, I’d start with The Walking, then work backwards to her first stuff, then move forwards from The Walking to her more recent stuff.
I will check it out!

Who is the best, undiscovered singer/band in the country right now? I’m going to assume you mean bands that aren’t HUUUGE and on the radio non stop…. There are so many great underground bands right now….here’s a list:

Who is the best, undiscovered singer/band in the country right now?
I’m going to assume you mean bands that aren’t HUUUGE and on the radio non stop…. There are so many great underground bands right now….here’s a list:

Dance Terror
The Estranged
The Girls
The Start
Girl in a Coma (SOOO IN LOVE!)
Squiddo
Atoms
Cute Lepers

…and on and on. How many am I missing? Tooo many!

Honestly, what did you think when this gay dude sent you a video lipsyncing to ‘Bathroom Stall’ with his cat?
I was in love as soon as I laid eyes on it and you. It was fun and goofy and, dare I say, a beautiful thing to see that. It is stuff like that that makes all of it worthwhile. People need to free themselves and be goofy more often.

I did that on a whim on Christmas Eve that year. A bunch of folks on Live Journal were doing lipsync videos, and I just took out my little camera and shot it. It took three tries to get it that ‘accurate’. Sadly, my camera had a memory capacity that prevented me from doing the entire song! Your Myspace page says ‘Gaytriot’. Are you a member of the GLBT cabal?
I am not gay (but my boyfriend is pretty girly and I’m a tomboy, so maybe we meet in the middle), but am a firm supporter of equal rights. The anti gay movement is so fucking stupid. (Sally Kern, you should be ashamed of yourself. Words such as these make my blood boil, make me wilt, and make me scream out all at once.) Come on people, don’t you have anything better to do then dictate and point the finger at a harmless lifestyle?I came up with “Gaytriot” at work with a coworker. (It’s so simple. I can’t be the first. There is NO WAY!) He was talking about how he likes to make up words and “Gaytriot” came up. After that we started to discuss the current use and abuse of the words “patriotism” and “freedom” since 9/11 and how they have been morphed by very narrow mindsets on ways of life and thinking. I like to think of “Gaytriot” kind of taking that back. I’d like to think it folds the current narrow view of patriotism and freedom back on itself.

I totally agree. It makes me angry that every time I see an American flag on the back of a car, I immediately think ‘Fucking Republicans’, when I should be thinking ‘fellow patriot’. They’ve so abused what makes this country great.
Yep. Did you ever imagine a time when the flag would feel insulting? I certainly didn’t.

It’s so interesting to go overseas these days because Americans are portrayed as such morons. (Portrayed? I guess our most recognizable faces ARE morons. YeeeHAW!)

I actually explained to a French man a couple of years ago that Americans don’t hate the French (well, the ones who didn’t buy into the shit) and that all the bull about “Freedom Fries” was propaganda.

HEY Everywhere else! Not everyone over here is a total moron! I promise.

I was thinking it would be great to take one of Toby Keiths uber redneck patriotism songs and rewrite it as a “Gaytriotism” song. It would be SOOO much fun to do that and make a video full of bears and trannies and freaks and whoever to back it up!

You’re working on some solo stuff – is this the end of The Epoxies? Or are you just taking a break?
Uhhhh. We called it an extended hiatus amongst ourselves and then the guys decided they didn’t want to release a press release. I can’t imagine getting back together at this point, but some time might make it a viable option again in the future. So, it might be a break. It might be a break up. Time will tell.

I’m having a BLAST working on new stuff though. A lot of it came from the start of the last attempt to write with the Epoxies and some of it is up to 5 years old. It feels like painting with sound. I’ve been home recording a demo FOREVER now. It is almost done.

I can’t wait to hear the finished product! And I’ll miss the Epoxies something fierce if they don’t come back!
We’ll see what happens. Sometimes it just needs to be a full on, not thinking it’ll ever happen again, break for it to become fun again. As for my own stuff, I just put up a bunch of the demos the other day on MySpace.

What is your take on the whole ‘2 Girls One Cup’ phenomenon?
It made me dry heave and I shut it off. Then I reloaded and watched it. I’ve heard it’s actually frozen yogurt. It amazing what the internet exposes people to. Did the general public even know that that sort of stuff existed beforehand? Perhaps, “2 Girls One Cup” was an educational video. Maybe some couples have started experimenting in the bedroom…or not.

I love that you went back and finished! How task oriented of you!
Hmm. I think it was more my unending fascination with things that are gross. I used to dig my fathers medical magazines out of the trash to see gross things in there. I think this might be the same, although my dad’s medical magazines never made me dry heave.

Who’s gonna play you in the movie version of your life? I would say Juliette Lewis, but she’s sort of insane.
I’ve met her and (this is going to sound pretty silly), but she didn’t get me. My sense of humor was too crass for her.

Maybe Megan Fox can play me? She’s hot! I heard I Iooked like Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice for a looong time, but I’ve not been too into her work since after Edward Scissorhands. I liked Angelina Jolie back in the Gia days and I admire her good samaritan work, but I think I’m on team Aniston.

Give us the rundown of a normal day for you. ‘I wake up and I…’
Make tea and breakfast. Go to the gym. Maybe go to work…maybe not. Get breakfast with friends on my days off. Sleep in or get up early and work out. Watch TV. Hang with my step son. Read. Take walks.

Wait a minute! Step-son? You’re a mom?
I KNOW! My partner, boyfriend, dude of many years has a son from when he was married. I NEVER thought I’d have a child in my life and, admittedly, it took a while to figure it out. I still have no interest in having kids, myself, but this guy is a BLAST. He’s almost 12. He’s starting to get zits and crushes. This makes more sense than the crying over not getting a lemonade. I brought him to Girls Rock the other day. I’ve brought him to shows. It’s not his thing, but he is such a rad little gentleman. He’s gonna be a good catch…and his middle name is Vader! (His dad wanted his first name to be Lord, but that was denied.)

Seen any good movies lately?
I went to see Girls Rock last night. It is about the “Rock and Roll Camp for Girls” here in Portland. It almost made me cry a few times. They really did into the feelings of alienation that so many girls feel. Hearing the girls talk about it brought back some difficult memories at times.

I’m just grateful that a safe place exists.

I’ve been missing everything recently. I wanted to see the Trailer Park Boys Movie and Closer. I did see American Gangster recently. I thought it was very good.

Closer was great. I couldn’t bring myself to see American Gangster because I hate, hate, HATE Denzel Washington. His politics stink.

Ever done any acting?
I was an extra in the Woody Harrelson/Jennifer Anniston movie that filmed in town last fall. Being an extra sucks. I’m glad I had the experience, but you are the shit on the shoe. The flowers in the scene were treated better than the extras.

I made my living one summer being an extra. This was in Chicago, and it was HELL. The worst were the ‘professional’ extras who told stories like ‘I worked with John Goodman, and he was so blah blah blah…’ And by ‘worked with’ they meant sat in the stands as an extra in a baseball game scene.
Yeah, there was one of those there. Mmmm, name dropping.I wouldn’t be against trying some acting sometime, but, hmmm, I don’t want to be one of those asshats who gets in front of the camera and think they deserve it because they sang a song once.I think it would be fun to do some B movies, art films, or performance art. I think that would make a little more sense for me.

What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played?
The worst gig I can think of was still super fun for me. It was about a year ago in Rotterdam. Everything malfunctioned. The guitar was going out. The keys were transposing themselves. Our very even-keeled drummer wanted to walk off stage. Sometimes a situation like that makes it more fun for me though. I like to take the chaotic energy and run with it…ham time, here we come.

The worst gigs are sometimes the ones when it’s the band against the audience in an opening spot, but sometimes that’s funny too. There was girl in Buffalo who wanted to kick my ass. (Who knows, I’m a pretty nice person.) I guess hating a band’s music means that you should hate the people in the band too. Makes sense, right? So, I told her she needed to come closer ’cause she was standing in back flipping me off. I spit, missed and hit the guy next to her. He thanked me and said he was never going to wash his face again. What a sweetheart. If I ever see her again, I have a big wet tongue kiss waiting.

Is the band famous in Japan? I’d think you guys would go over huge there.
We played there once opening for Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. I think we went over pretty well. We did have one guy wait for us outside our hotel for hours. Apparently we were huge to him.Your feelings on mashups?
Meh. I can usually do without them, but Smash Up Derby from SF does a pretty great job with them.

And finally, I’m going to pull a question randomly from the internet by typing your name and a question mark into a search engine and see what pops up. Here it is: ‘The other question Roxy and Nancy are asked, did they ever wear roller skates?’
I don’t know about Nancy, but it’s been YEARS since I wore roller skates. They were the strap on kind (mmm, strap on) and I think I ate it in the neighbors driveway and skinned my knee. I’ll take hockey skates any day.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my ridiculous questions!
Thanks for thinking of me! It’s been an honor.
